<p>The 109th AS is the wing's flying unit and has operated the C-130E since 1981. The 109th Aero Squadron was organized in August 1917 and ordered to active duty from February 1941 until May 1945. The unit returned to federal service in September 1946 as the 109th Fighter Squadron with the P-51D at Holman Field, St Paul. The squadron was recalled to active duty as a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron for the Korean War from March 1951 until December 1952, when it returned to peacetime levels. The unit moved to Minneapolis-St Paul Airport and was assigned the T-28A for a year until mid-1957, when F-94A/Bs were delivered. The Starfire presence was short-lived, as the unit received the F-89H at year's end. The Scorpion was operated until January 1960, when the C-97A was delivered and the unit became an Air Transport Squadron. The unit upgraded to the C-97G and was redesignated a Military Airlift Squadron in January 1966. The C-130A was delivered in March 1971, resulting in change of designation to Tactical Airlift Squadron.
